WHEELING, W. Va. – Back by popular demand, the Williams Lea Tag Chili Cook-off takes place on Friday, May 18 at the company’s Main Street office in the Stone Center. Now in its second year, the event, which benefits the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley, challenges WLT staff to show off their chili-making skills and put their products in front of a panel of local celebrity judges.
Entrants are awarded up to ten points for the chili’s taste, consistency, aroma, color and bite. The first-place winner and runner-up receive cash awards. The winner also receives paid entry into the 2018 Wheeling Feeling Chili Cook-off on June 2 at Heritage Port, plus has his or her name inscribed on the prestigious “Chili Bowl Trophy,” which is prominently displayed in the Stone Center.
This year’s judging panel includes: Rose Warmuth, City Solicitor and co-founder of the Wheeling Feeling Chili Cook-off; Dave Warmuth, co-founder of the Wheeling Feeling Chili Cook-off; Jessica Rine, Executive Director of The United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley; WTRF News Anchor and Reporter Tate Blanchard, and Glenn Elliott, Mayor of the City of Wheeling.
WLT employees attending the lunchtime event can purchase tasting tickets to sample a variety of the chilis and cast a vote for their favorite. The top staff pick receives the “People’s Choice Award” and a cash prize. Proceeds from the tasting tickets and other concessions are presented to The United Way.
“We put this event together to help give awareness to the larger United Way Chili Cook-off that takes place at Heritage Point,” said WLT Wheeling General Manager Dion Scripture. “We partner with the United Way because it’s a great organization that supports so many other wonderful organizations in our community.”
The WLT Chili Cook-off is organized by staff members on the Bridge Committee, which organizes and supports community events and employee volunteerism. In 2017, WLT staff contributed $2,000 to the United Way from this event.
