Donations needed for statewide food drive on May 5
Wheeling – The Country Roads Food Drive is a statewide food collection and fundraiser organized by the United Ways of West Virginia. This food drive will help feed families across the Mountain State during the coronavirus pandemic. The drive will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, May 5.
In Wheeling, Moundsville and Wellsburg, the food drive will be held at Kroger where both nonperishable items and/or money may be dropped off. In New Martinsville, the food drive will be held at Witschey’s Market. Donations of food and/or monetary donations are both welcomed at the drop-off sites.
Unexpired items such as canned vegetables, canned fruit, peanut butter, spaghetti, pasta sauce, canned meat and other staples are encouraged. Cleaning products and personal hygiene items are also welcomed.
Food drive sponsors include the United Way, West Virginia Radio Corporation, Kroger, and Pickering Associates. Kroger will donate $10,000 in gift cards while Pickering Associates will match monetary donations up to $10,000. “We speak several times weekly about issues throughout the state and how we can work together to address them,” said Jessica Rine, Executive Director of the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley, regarding the United Ways of West Virginia collaborative. “This food drive is a great example of how the collaborative is making an impact on the entire state.”
Volunteers for the day include nonprofit agency volunteers, Senator Ryan Weld, Morgan & Zack Allman and Yourkovich & Associates. Donors will be asked to place their donations in the provided receptacle and maintain social distancing.
