William A. Childers Jr

Company:  West Liberty University

Job Title: Physician Assistant Program Director/Assistant Professor

Email Address: bill.childers@westliberty.edu

History with the United Way: I have been involved for over 3 years now beginning with serving on the allocations committee.  I am now also serving on the budget committee.

What you like best about the Ohio Valley: I am pleased to say that I sense a positive trend in the valley.  There is cause for optimism in our area.  New businesses have arrived and continue to do so.  The Ohio Valley offers some cultural and many outdoor opportunities yet, it maintains that “small town” feel.

Why you chose to get involved with the United Way: After moving back to the valley, I wanted to get involved in the community but, didn’t know what possibilities existed.  Therefore, a very logical first step was to begin with the allocations committee which opened my eyes to the many opportunities  that exist.

What you like best about the Ohio Valley: The sense of community, connectedness, and fellowship is what brought me home to the Ohio Valley after a few years of living elsewhere. When you add in the outdoor recreational opportunities, this place is very special.

Why you chose to get involved with the United Way:  The United Way is remarkable in the amount of people that are directly served through its efforts.  With almost 100 percent of the monies donated staying local, the impact we have on the people in our community is extraordinary.

Whether we are pulling together to help neighbors through a tragedy, or working together to write a new history for this region, we give it our all.

Patricia Fast

Company:  THE Health Plan

Job Title:  VP of Government Programs

Email Address:  pfast@healthplan.org

History with the United Way:  been part of the United Way Board of Directors for over ten years.  During that time I have served as an officer and worked with numerous committees including the Allocations Committee and Personnel and Finance Committee.

What you like best about the Ohio Valley:  I love the way the residents in the Ohio Valley are always ready and willing to pull together to help their neighbors.  My husband and I moved here in 1982 expecting to live here a very short while but upon finding what a great community it was, we chose to stay and raise our family here.

Why you chose to get involved with the United Way:  Interestingly enough, my first exposure to the United Way was through some teen offices I held in my hometown with the YWCA and Campfire Girls.  We worked in youth leadership roles with the United Way.  When I came to Wheeling, I was fortunate to work for a company that was very supportive of the United Way.  As I have gotten more involved over the years, I have been extremely impressed at how our local United Way works so closely with ALL of the local Agencies and fosters strong collaboration between the Agencies.  I think we have unique collaboration here in the Ohio Valley and I am proud to be part of the community and The United Way.
